Types of Decals

There are basically 2 major kinds of decals: Cut Vinyl Decal (Transfer Decals) and Printed Vinyl Decal (Peel & Stick).

Duchi Designs specializes mainly in Cut Vinyl Decals.

What is a Cut Vinyl Decal?

Cut vinyl decals (also called Transfer Decals) are die-cut shapes or lettering that comes in 3 layers. The first top layer is the clear transfer tape, the middle layer is the adhesive vinyl and the last bottom layer is the paper backing. Cut Vinyl decals are made from pre-colored/single color vinyl rolls or sheets and usually made in one color. The design/lettering is cut on the pre-colored vinyl with a Vinyl cutter plotting machine and the extra vinyl around the cut outs are weeded out (peeled off).

Multicolor cut vinyl decals are made by layering the cut outs one after the other and takes time to achieve. Additionally, you are limited by available pre-colored vinyl choices.

Cut vinyl decals are applied with the transfer tape to the surface you wish to apply it to. Once applied, you will need to carefully peel off the transfer tape. Cut Vinyl Decals don't have a background. The background of the decal is the color of the location it is applied to. Your decal will come with application instructions.

Differences between Cut Vinyl and Printed Vinyl Decals

1. CUT VINYL DECALS (Transfer Decals)

Cut vinyl decals takes some time and patience to apply (all orders come with detailed application instructions).
They have no background. The background you see behind the cut vinyl design is what you install it onto.
Cut vinyls look like they are hand-painted onto the surface they are applied onto as they conform to texture.
Cut vinyls are CUT (NOT PRINTED) from rolls/sheets of single color pre-colored vinyl, therefore you are limited by color selection.
Multiple colors of vinyl must be layered to achieve a multi-colored decal. Cut vinyl decals do not fade in direct sunlight.

2. PRINTED VINYL DECALS (Peel & Stick)

Printed vinyl decals are much easier to install and they are referred to as "peel and stick" stickers.
Printed vinyls have visible backgrounds- either clear background or white backgrounds .
Printed vinyls are photo realistic. They are made by printing designs with ink onto clear or white vinyl. This therefore is able to produce multiple colors and maintains specific colors, shades and gradients like a photograph. Printed vinyls can fade overtime in direct sunlight.
Printed Decals are made by PRINTING designs on clear or white vinyl with an inkjet or laser printer, then the shapes are die-cut with a vinyl cutter plotting machine afterwards. Printed Decals are also known as Peel & Stick or Print & Cut Stickers and do not come with a transfer tape as the design is flat. Printed Vinyl Decals are photo-realistic and can be made in full color with color gradients, just like photographs.
